A higher price does not mean higher quality. An agency charging €8,000 may deliver a slower site with weaker SEO than a specialist charging €500, if that specialist has a refined process and builds on fast infrastructure. Always compare what is included, not the number alone.

What Red Flags Should I Watch for When Hiring a Web Designer in Ireland?

Here are the red flags to watch for when hiring a web design company in Ireland:

• No portfolio or only screenshots. A professional web designer will have live URLs they can point you to. Screenshots can be faked. If they cannot show you a real, working site they have built, move on.
• No fixed price. Quotes that say "from €X" or "charged hourly" can end up costing far more than expected. Always get a fixed total in writing.
• No mention of SEO. If a designer does not mention search engine optimisation at all, assume it is not included. A site that does not rank is not useful.

When you get a quote, ask: "What SEO is included in the build price?" A clear answer is a good sign. A vague one, or an upsell, is a warning.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Web Design Company in Ireland?

Before you pay any deposit, ask these questions in writing:

1. Can you send me links to live websites you have built for businesses like mine?
2. What SEO is included in the build? Will each page have a unique title tag, meta description, and schema markup?
3. Who will own my domain name after the site is live?
4. Who manages my hosting, and what happens if I want to move to a different host?
5. What is the total price, including all extras such as copywriting, logo work, or stock photos?
6. What is the delivery date from today, and what happens if you miss it?
7. What support do you offer after the site goes live?
8. Where is my website data stored, and will my site be GDPR compliant? Under GDPR, Irish businesses must tell visitors what data they collect and get consent for tracking cookies. Your designer should know this and build a compliant cookie banner and privacy policy into the site.

The main scheme is the Trading Online Voucher (TOV). It is run by your Local Enterprise Office and provides matched funding up to €2,500 for eligible digital costs. To receive the maximum amount, a business must spend at least €5,000. Eligibility conditions apply: fewer than 10 employees, trading for at least 6 months, and annual turnover under €2 million.

The key rule: approval must be granted before you spend any money. Do not hire a web designer and then apply for the TOV. Apply first.
